What to Do When a Prospective Client Doesn't Respond to Your Proposal

I personally thought it was worthy of posting on my blog for us all to learn from.

This question was asked: "I've got someone who could use your help. She heads up a non-profit group that needs to promote itself better. I told her you'd be in touch."
My colleague handed me her contact information.

I e-mailed.

No reply.

I followed up with a phone call. And I still haven't heard back. Not a peep. And this is someone who needs - and asked for - my help.

An isolated case? Hardly…

Last month, I submitted a proposal to a prospect to revamp his website. He was very excited about the project - but every time I try to reach him to get a "yes" or a "no," all I get is silence. He too "should" have responded - but he hasn't.

When this happens, it's annoying - but that doesn't necessarily mean you're being ignored. These days, it seems to be the way more and more very busy people are simply saying "Not right now."

So what do you do about it? Do you leave the ball in their court and just sit around waiting for them to hit it back? Of course not.

It takes an average of seven (some even say 10) sales calls to close a deal. So if you always give up after the first couple of tries, you'll never sell your service to anyone. It's your responsibility to remind your prospects (sometimes again and again) that they are interested in your proposal. It's your responsibility to be
persistent until they're ready to continue the conversation.

That said, here are five tried-and-true techniques that I - and people I know - use to speed up the process:

1. Ask for a simple "yes" or "no." Author and physician Evan Lipkis got silence from a reporter from Lady's Home Journal after submitting an article idea. So he wrote a simple e-mail message that said, "Just give me a yes or No!"
He got a 40-minute interview and a story in the magazine.

2. Put "Second Request" in the e-mail subject line. When faced with silence, Howard Stone, co-author of "Too Young to Retire", sends the same e-mail message a week later with "Second Request" in the subject line.

3. Give them a deadline to respond. Some people only take action when a deadline is looming. So ask your prospects to respond by a certain date, even if that date is arbitrary.

4. Express concern. On a second or third try, express concern by saying "I hope you are all right." This works especially well with people you know personally. It brings the interaction to a human level, reminds them that there's a real person
trying to reach them, and usually provokes a response.

5. Put them on auto-drip. Whether or not you have a deal pending, you should have an automated marketing tool in place to help keep your name in all your prospects' minds. The three best ways to remind them of the service that you provide are with a monthly (or even quarterly) e-mail newsletter, a print newsletter, or a direct-mail postcard.

I know what you're thinking. You don't want to be a pest. So where is that line between pestiness and persistence?

There is no definite answer. It will be different for every prospect. But it will help you stay on the right side of the line by asking them questions like, "When should I contact you next?" and "Do you mind if I stay in touch every month or so?"

And remember this: When they're ready to go ahead with your proposal, they will be grateful that you didn't give up. In fact, the next time you call, they just might say, "I'm so glad to hear from you. I've been meaning to call."

 
FIVE OF THE TOP TEN MISCONCEPTIONS of my MLM BUSINESS

We all want to build this thing as  fast as we can. But first I want to make sure everyone have their  heads on straight. This is not a get-rich-quick
program; it is probably  more like a get rich SLOW program. That doesn't mean that you and I shouldn't  attack our business FAST but it does mean that we should understand that no  matter what, it's going to take time to build.

I'm going to give you the TOP  TEN reasons your financial expectations are out of  order...

1. YOU  THOUGHT YOU COULD CREATE WEALTH WITHOUT HARD  WORK: Some people get into Shaklee and they think  the only thing they have to do is add a little bit of water and they're going  to become instant millionaires.  But this isn't the Shaklee Lottery, it's  the Shaklee OPPORTUNITY! Now what's hard  work? 
I would say Part-Time is probably 3-5 hours per week, and  Full-Time is probably
20-hours per week.  Is 20 hours per week hard  work?  For example, if you do
five business presentations a week --   that's ten hours,  plus training each
Saturday or four hours  for a total of 14 hours -- that leaves six hours per
week for follow ups  and phone calls.  I find it hard to believe that anyone
here is doing  more than 20 hours a week!  And that's OK. Put in whatever time
you CAN  but be honest with yourself about how hard you've worked and make sure that if  you only have a few hours to invest in your business, you use them on the most  productive activities:  Showing the  Showing th, and Showing  the
Products.
This is not hard work -- you just have to make sure you SHOW UP. PUT
IN SOME EFFORT.  DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU'RE GOING TO DO.  Full-time in Shaklee is what is considered part-time in a regular  job. The only difference is: 
after 3-5 years at a part-time job,  all you have is a Part-Time Job! After 3-5
years with Shaklee, you will  have a lifetime residual income! 

2. YOU THOUGHT YOU COULD WORK THIS  BUSINESS PART-TIME AND RECEIVE FULL-TIME INCOME:
We live today in a world of instant gratification.  We live in a
world where people want it now, but they are not willing to  put the time in. If
you got a job at McDonalds, they wouldn't even let you run the register until
you had some on-the-job-training.  In the same way, we  start out small in
this business, sharing the Opportunity and the Products with friends who either 
want to: Feel better, Look Better, Live Longer, or Make More Money!!!

But remember, full-time in Shaklee is just like part-time in anything else.  At the
end of two  years in the business, if you have your residual income up to
$1000/month, think about what that means.  How much money would you have to have in the bank to generate that kind of an interest payment?

You would need about $100,000 in the bank at 10% to generate that. That is if you can find a 10%  interest rate today. What could you do to save $100,000 in the next two years? Once you get this built, it's  there month after month after month after month.

3. YOU  THOUGHT THE TOP INCOME EARNERS BECAME WEALTHY BECAUSE OF  LUCK:
When you start to do well, people will tell you,  "You got lucky."  You'll probably
say: Yeah, the HARDER I TRIED, the LUCKIER I got!! Top Income Earners
Persevere.  Plain and Simple.  

4. YOU THOUGHT MOST OF YOUR FAMILY AND  FRIENDS WOULD RUSH TO JOIN YOUR BUSINESS:
We want everyone we love to be healthy &  wealthy, don't we? 
Unfortunately what WE want for them, sometimes isn't  what THEY want for themselves!  Sometimes your loved ones and closest  friends can be your toughest critics!  Are you going to get everyone to  join you in your business or try Shaklee products?  No. But the good news  is:YOU DON'T NEED EVERYONE!!  Just think of it this way:  If  you can find just 20 customers/families to SHAKLEE-IZE their homes with just  100PV each, you will be earning $840 per month! Or, another example:  if  you could find just 4 friends interested in the Shaklee
Opportunity, and they  could find just 4 friends each, you would have over 20 teammates in your  downline!  That right there could also earn you 100s of dollars per  month!!! Play with the numbers. What if you found just 5 new teammates in the  next year and they each found just 5 new teammates of their own  that  would be 30 teammates in your first year! What if next year each of those 30  found 5 new teammates you would have 180 teammates in your downline!!!  

That could put you in the SERIOUS INCOME category!!!! So don't go home and  expect everyone to be as excited as you are. Remember, some will, some  won't. And that's OK!  EXPECT a little criticism from your friends  and family, and you'll be just fine! And remember:  it's not always EASY,  but it IS WORTH IT!

5. YOU  THOUGHT SIMPLE WAS THE SAME THING AS  EASY: This is an incredibly simple business. The two  things we do in Shaklee,  sign up a few customers and sign up a few  reps. That's all we do. Incredibly simple! Is it easy?
Sometimes YES! Sometimes you just tell someone a little bit, and they are EXCITED!  But, this is the real world, and it's not ALWAYS easy. You still have to  talk to people every single day. You still have to hear a few rejections. Be persistent. Just keep talking to people every single day! 

The one thing all the big money earners have done right is they NEVER quit!
Winners expect to win! Winners FIND a way to win.  Winners  MAKE things happen. To be a winner, Big or Small, You need a positive mental  attitude!

Easy Ways to Network

Networking comes naturally to some people.  They meet people
easily, strike up a conversation without hesitation, and have a
knack for remembering names.  Most of the rest of us aren't that
lucky.  We're shy, unsure, and aren't at all certain how to make
a good and lasting impression.

Here are some pointers to make networking easier.  They work for
anyone in just about any situation.

1.  Be positive and enthusiastic.  The ancient Greeks realized
the power of enthusiasm.  They considered it a gift from the
gods. People have so many challenges in life that they really
appreciate meeting someone who is positive and full of energy.

Your enthusiasm can fit your style.  A soft, gentle enthusiasm
works as well as any other.

2.  Try to help people.  When you see an opportunity to help--
even a small one--jump right in.  Nothing makes friends and
builds trust faster.

3.  Ask questions and listen carefully.  Everyone likes to talk
about themselves.  And we like it even better if we're talking to
a good listener.
