There was a time when Multi-Level Marketing was a dirty word to many people. It conjured up images of uncle Eddy inviting neighbors over for dinner only to hound them mercilessly to join his organization.
The Internet and America's sharp move toward home-based business has changed much of that. Today MLM companies have huge operations that rival any of America's large corporations. Members don't have to bug friends and neighbors because they can find plenty of opportunity seekers online.
I've watched the MLM industry for years. Lots of people don't make money at it because--surprise--they don't work very hard to make their business a success. On the other hand, I know plenty of folks who worked with determination and were earning six figures within a few years.
Here are some things to consider when setting up your MLM business:
1. Consider how much the business will cost you each month. If one opportunity requires you to buy $50 in product each month while another wants you to purchase $200 in product, pick the one you can easily afford month after month.
2. Get into a business that sells consumable products or services. You want customers who use it up and come back for more month after month. Repeat product sales is where the big checks come from.
3. Come up with a marketing routine that keeps you motivated. Talk to people you meet, network online, send out postcards, talk to groups. Find what works best for you, then do it, do it, do it long after anyone else would have given up. In business, being stubborn is an asset.
Have you ever run a one time ad and then wondered why you didn't get much response? Advertising and marketing almost always takes repeated use to work properly. Once in a while you will get a product or service that sells with the first ad, but most take time to sink in with customers.
There's an old newspaperman's joke that dates back more than 100 years that illustrates how ads work.
1. The first time a man looks at an ad, he doesn't see it. 2. The second time, he doesn't notice it. 3. The third time, he is conscious of its existence. 4. The fourth time, he faintly remembers having seen it.
The joke continues on until the sixteenth time has him thinking he'll buy some day and the twentieth time he sees the ad he instructs his wife to go out and buy the product.
Part of marketing anything is handling rejection. It's always great when a prospect says "I'm so glad to see you. This is just what I need!" But the law of averages says most of the people you come in contact with won't be that enthusiastic.
There are so many ads and people trying to get us to spend money that most of us put on a stern face any time a sales person approaches. This doesn't mean we dislike the sales person, just that we're getting psyched up to hold our ground.
Of course, a marketing person realizes this and works to set our reservations at ease, helping us to relax and understand how the sales person may be able to solve our problems.
Keep this in mind when you are marketing something. It doesn't matter if you are selling cars, telling a neighbor about your MLM opportunity, or using email to sell yourself to a prospective employer.
Rejection is part of the game. Realize people aren't rejecting you personally, but the situation. In most cases they simply aren't ready to buy at this time. No doesn't usually mean no, but not right now. A week, month, or year from the now the prospect who rejected your offer may come looking for you wanting to buy.
Taking Your Home-Based Business Tax Advantages to the Bank
By Graham Anthony, CEO Upline Here's a concept -- you can put an additional $5,000 of spending money per year in your pocket if you sign up as a distributor in Barefoot Secret Company -- whether or not you actually succeed at first in signing up a downline or retailing products..
How...? As a Network Marketing distributor, you will be entitled to an advantageous collection of tax breaks which will enable you to reclaim thousands of dollars in taxes -- dollars normally taken out of your day job paychecks by the IRS. The good tax laws that allow Network Marketers -- and other small business owners -- to garner substantial tax breaks are the same laws that GM and IBM benefit from. The only difference between most Network Marketing businesses and these Fortune 500 entities, in the eyes of the IRS, is their size, and the fact that Network Marketers can also deduct many expenses from their homes and daily lives. If these expenses contribute to the success of their Network Marketing home-based business, then they are fully tax deductible! What is deductible by a Network Marketing home-based business owner? When you discuss business out to lunch or dinner with co-workers and friends, your meal is 50 percent tax deductible. For that matter, so are theater and sports event tickets, and other expenses relating to entertainment focused on building relationships with prospects, retail customers and downline or upline distributors. (Remember, by definition, everyone is a potential prospect or customer of your Network Marketing business!) Automobile mileage is deductible between your home-based business office and a meeting where business is discussed, such as the meals mentioned above, or an opportunity meeting -- or even a golf outing with friends who are prospects! Travel is deductible -- be it to an industrial center or an island resort -- if the purpose is to hold an opportunity meeting, to discuss business with other travelers, or to attend a seminar. Your spouse's travel can even be deductible if his or her presence is helpful in closing the sale. You can also deduct wages paid to your children for help in the business -- and if those children are under 14 and have no other sources of income, all ages under $4,000 per year are tax free. It's a great way to help save for college with Uncle Sam's help! You can pay with pre-tax dollars for expenses like braces, eyeglasses and visits to the doctor if properly structured through a qualified medical expense reimbursement plan -- this is easy to do with standard forms. Home computers, fax machines, telephones, office supplies, and office furniture are also fully tax deductible. But there's more.... The IRS's only requirement is that you legitimately treat your Network Marketing business as a business -- not a hobby. That means regularly working your business. What counts as "regularly working" your Network Marketing business? Just taking the actions you are suppose to be taking... call prospects regularly, use the product, tell people about the product and, teach others to do the same. If the people you sponsor actively follow your guidance, they will make money; but even if they don't, the IRS will recognize their right to their home-based business tax breaks -- If they properly document their activities and expenses! Documentation Is Everything for Tax Deductions! Documentation is a big word, but a simple process. It merely means writing down in your day planner all business-related activities, business- related expenses and any revenues you earn. Consistent record keeping will prove to the IRS (on the rare chance you have to) that you are truly running a business and not engaged in a hobby -- whether or not it makes money. What do these records look like? They're simple. Just writing down who you spoke with about the business, where you went in pursuit of your business, and what you spent in the ordinary course of conducting your business -- if done in a regular and consistent manner -- will provide you with proper documentation and a sea of deductible business expenses! Sure, it's a hassle writing down your business-related activities every day; but for a maximum investment of five minutes a day, the time spent record keeping is worth a minimum of $5,000 in tax savings. That's $240/hour of tax savings for the time you spent keeping track of your activities and expenses. A pretty good wage for simple record keeping! So, what do these records look like exactly? Here's a sample day from a day planner: 8:00 AM: Breakfast meeting with Prospect Jones (a friend who works near you). Presented products. She's considering it. Breakfast cost $14.50. Mileage from home office to breakfast: 15 miles. Ate at Chock Full of Nuts. 12:00 PM: Lunch with Prospect Smith (a co-worker). Discussed how great I felt using the product. He's considering it. Lunch Cost: $15.75. Ate at Joe's. 5:30 PM: Drink with Prospect Lee (a friend). Discussed the product. Drinks cost $16.00. Lee committed to buy 1 month's worth of the product. 7:00 PM: Attended Opportunity Meeting. Mileage to event: 10 miles. Mileage to next event:15 miles. Watched presentations and gave support. 8:30 PM: Attend professional basketball game at home with Prospect Harris and our spouses. Harris is considering the opportunity. Cost for tickets: $60. Help from Uncle Sam What's deductible in your ordinary lifestyle expenses when you own a Network Marketing business? If you legitimately work your business engaged in the following actions, here's what's deductible. Check out the math: $500: Lunch with co-workers is deductible (Hey, they're prospects!). $4/day times 250 work days = $1,000 x 50 percent deductible = $500 $1,500: Travel expenses for you and spouse to vacation land -- if you hold opportunity meetings (could be to the friends you are visiting) and your spouse participates $1,800: Home office deduction ($150/month) for use of spare room in house out of which you operate your home-based business $1,500: Automobile mileage from home office to day job or other places where you actively encounter prospects and actively discuss the product. (20 miles round trip to work x 250 days x 30 cents/mile) $8,000: Tax free wages for two kids without other jobs who assist you in your Home-Based Business (2 kids x $4,000 per year paid to their savings accounts for college/weddings, etc.) $2,700: Health insurance for family (Spouse is an employee of your home-based business, who chooses to include you and kids on the plan -- $225/month time 12 months) That's $16,000 Total tax-deductible expenses x 35% combined Federal and State tax rate = $5,600 Cash refund from IRS on April 15th Remember, to deduct the above expenses, you must be actively working your business in the lunches, trips, visits, etc. mentioned above, and be keeping proper records. If you are an active Network Marketer, this is not only perfectly legitimate -- it's good business Upline recommends that Network Marketers consult their accountants and individual tax advisors in applying these concepts to their businesses. Five Stumbling Blocks To Successful Networking... And How To Overcome Them
The ability to connect with people is essential to success in any business. Professional networking events present opportunities to interact with others on a personal level and to develop profitable relationships.
These occasions are critical for anyone who wants to grow a business or promote a career.
Many people are simply not comfortable walking into a room full of strangers and striking up conversations. Here are five common stumbling blocks that you may face and tips to help you overcome them.
A Reluctance to Talk to Strangers
You were taught at an early age not to speak to people you don't know. It's not safe. In certain situations today this is still good advice.
In business, however, talking to strangers is a way to generate interest and support for your products and services. If you only talk to the people you already know, you will miss out on opportunities to make new connections and establish valuable contacts.
To get past your discomfort in talking to strangers, set a goal for yourself before you attend any networking event. Decide how many new contacts you want to make or how many strangers you want to meet. In some cases, you may specifically target individuals whom you'd like to know.
Next come up with some icebreakers or conversation starters. Have questions prepared that you can ask anyone you meet at the event. You may want to inquire about other people's business, their connection to the sponsoring organization or their opinion of the venue.
Lack of a Formal Introduction
It's much easier to make a new contact when there is someone else to handle the introduction and pave the way. If you wait for another person to make the move you may not meet anyone. At networking events, the goal is to meet as many people as possible.
This is the time to take the bull by the horns, walk up to people you don't know, introduce yourself and start a conversation. You can do this if you have prepared your self-introduction in advance.
You will not introduce yourself the same way on every occasion. Perhaps it is your first time to attend an association meeting. In that case, you might want to say that as part of your introduction. Let people know who you are, why you are there and give them a reason to ask more about you.
Fear of Being Seen as Pushy
You may think that you will turn people off if you are assertive and that if they want to talk to you, they will make the first move.
If this is your line of thinking you will find yourself spending your time alone at the reception or meeting function and leaving without a single new connection. Being open, friendly and interested does not turn people off.
You will not come across as overly aggressive if you seek out the "approachable" people. These are the ones who are standing alone or who are speaking in groups of three or more. Two people talking to each other are not approachable because they may be having a private conversation and you would be interrupting.
Thinking that Other People May Not Like You
There is always the risk that the other person is not interested in you and doesn't want to meet or talk to you. It happens.
If that is the case, don't take it personally. Nothing ventured is nothing gained. When you get a cold shoulder, smile, move on and say to yourself, "Next?"
Having Your Intentions Misunderstood
Approaching someone of the opposite sex to begin a conversation may seem more like flirting than networking. This is more of an issue for women than men.
Women have an equal place in the work arena and need to make professional connections the same as men do. Women in business can no longer afford to hold back when there is opportunity at hand.
Neither men nor women will have their motives misinterpreted if they present themselves professionally in their attire and if they keep the conversation focused on business issues or topics that are not personal or private.
Whatever your stumbling blocks, face them before the next networking event and devise a personal plan for getting past them. Once you do, you will find yourself connecting with confidence and courtesy on every occasion and the results will be reflected in your bottom line.

It tells you that they want your product or service. They're not saying, "it's not right for me." They're saying, "I've decided I want, need and have to have it, but just don't want to pay what you're asking for it." As with most selling situations, the real stall is the money.
Your job is to eliminate money as the concern.
Here's how to do it: You calmly agree with them at first.
Then, you help them rationalize the decision. It's the bottom line of all closing attempts.
Here are the words to use:
"That may very well be true, Sue. And, after all, in today's economy, we all want the most for our money. A truth that I have learned over the years is that the cheapest price is not always what we really want.
Most people look for three things when making an investment: 1. the finest quality; 2. the best service; and 3. the lowest price.
I have never yet found a company that could provide the finest quality and the best service for the lowest price. I'm curious, Sue, for your health and happiness, which of those three would you be most willing to give up? Quality? Service? Or, low price?"
When you put it that way, they rationalize the message of "you get what you pay for."
If they are truly concerned about the quality of your product, these words help lessen the strength of the money concern.
Here is the Question: I have all these wonderful products, but I have NO MONEY to advertise nor to get my website up and running. What can I do in the mean time to get people to call, even if to get a catalog?

First Step Training Program – 50 Cities in 50 Days!
The First Step Training Program continues after three weeks on the road with new, prospective, and existing Members packing the rooms in training venues across the country. Designed and delivered by experienced Business Leaders, First Step provides a basic, action-oriented approach to help new Distributors know exactly what they need to do to get started building for success and ignite their businesses in 2005.
Kevin Yoneda, Director, CA:
Wow! What an incredible First Step Training tonight in Fullerton! All I can say is the three hours flew! I think that everyone who attended (it was a packed house) walked away with a vision way beyond expectations.
One of the coolest things is that we all now have a solid track to run on which will be implemented throughout all of Shaklee. The Fast Start program is incredible and that, combined with the fact that we have products which are superb, will help give all of us a momentum that will take off!
I think one of the biggest compliments and a true testament to why everyone needs to get their folks to these trainings is the fact that a veteran Shaklee distributor came up after and said that she learned more in the three hours tonight about building the business than the last several years in total!
The First Step Training Program is a must see event. Your $10 Registration fee that covers the training session and your materials will be collected at the door, although we urge our Distributors to call 1-800-SHAKLEE to register in advance for the meeting they plan to attend. Dates and locations for all First Step meetings are listed online at MyShaklee. All meetings are 7 - 10 pm unless otherwise stated.
Week 4 of First Step opens on next Tuesday, 3/1 with doubleheader meetings in Chicago, IL and Tulsa, OK, followed by Miami, FL and Cleveland, OH (Wednesday 3/2). The following evening, Thursday, 3/3, meetings will be held simultaneously in three cities: Virginia Beach, VA, Greensboro, NC and Pittsburgh, PA.
Week 5 opens on Tuesday March 8 with simultaneous meetings in San Diego, CA, Portland, OR and Jacksonville, FL. Doubleheader meetings are slated for Phoenix, AZ and Salt Lake City, UT on Wednesday, 3/9, followed by Denver, CO and Indianapolis, IN on Thursday, 3/10.
Please Note: The location for the Cleveland, Ohio Meeting on March 2 has been changed. The new location is as follows:
Every Sunday night, Kathi Minsky and I host a live interview with a field leader called Leader's Spotlight, at The Global Success Team site. Last night our guest was Master Coordinator Ross Earley from Dallas, TX. My goal from every meeting I attend is to come away with one great idea or thought that I can use in my business. The interview with Ross was great and there are two ideas from the interview I want to share with you.
Career Disturbed- Ross uses this term to describe people who bottom line-- don't want to/plan to be doing what they are currently doing for the rest of their life. These people are open to looking at other income and career opportunities. This is where Ross was at when he was introduced to Barefoot secret company. Ross was highly successful and earning a great income in the insurance and securities industry. On the outside, it looked like Ross was doing great and most people would say/think-- Ross wouldn't be interested in taking a look at a business like Barefoot Secret Company.
However, on the inside Ross was career disturbed. He didn't like what he was having to do to be successful and to earn the great income he was making at the time. He was questioning whether or not what he was doing was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. When he was approached about the Barefoot secret business, he was open and willing to take a look, and the rest is history! Ross was quick to emphasize--- do not pre-judge in your own mind what other people maybe thinking in their mind. You have no idea where a person is at in their thinking, regardless of how things might look on the outside.
Get Ahead of the Wave- You know, the nature of any sales and marketing business is that there are always new product lines being launched, and new sales and marketing incentives being launched. Why? It's the only way to excite and motivate your sales force, and to keep your customers interested. The only problem with this is- the sales force hears time and time again-- this is the best time ever. Know what I mean? When people hear that so many times, the excitement of something new, and this is the best time ever, can begin to lose impact and appeal. The danger in adapting this (I've heard this before) attitude is, it can cause a person to miss out on a tremendous opportunity in their life.
Ross made the statement, one we have been hearing for a few months now-- "We all have the opportunity to literally be on the ground floor of an exciting new opportunity with a Company that has a 50-year track record and is financially rock solid." He went on to say- "We have a chance to get ahead of the wave right now."
Do you know what it means to be in front of a wave and have it thrust you forward vs. trying to jump on a wave and trying to "catch the wave"? That's the difference we are talking about right now. Opportunities wait for no one-- they come and they go. The opportunity we have in Barefoot Secret Company right now is to position ourselves in front of the wave growth that is just beginning, and will begin to swell in the months and next few years ahead.
I do not believe there is any such thing as waiting for the timing to be perfect, for everything in my life to be just right, and when I'm at that point--- then I will be ready and have the time to capitalize on what's taking place in the business. Just when I think-- ok, things have settled down and now is a good time, something else in life comes along and that's just the way life is. Life is not going to put itself on hold for a year or two so I can have the time I need to focus on what I want to do. Right?
The bottom line to all of this is--- Roger Barnett and his team are working feverishly and putting systems, programs, and incentives in place to thrust Barefoot Secret Company forward in the industry this year and beyond. We are on the ground floor with the opportunity to position ourselves in front of the wave of growth that is happening. The people in this business who are willing to focus on the fundamental business building activities of prospecting, sponsoring, and training new people are going to begin "creating a new future " today.
Don't wait for everything to be "just right" in your life because that isn't going to happen. Just decide if you want things to be different and decide how many hours a week you are willing to commit to developing new business and creating new income that will pay you every month for the rest of your life in Barefoot Secret Company.
Someday you are going to want to slow down and enjoy life and the fruits of your labor. How much monthly income do you want to have coming in when you reach that someday point in your life? Do you want to live on a fixed income someday, or to live on an unlimited income that can continue to grow even as you are taking time to enjoy life? The latter part of this question takes commitment, focus, discipline, and effort---- and those four words put into action will reward you with a great monthly income for the rest of your life!
Written By: Fran Asher Lately, I have heard so many people say how difficult Network Marketing is. "Its hard." "I can't get appointments." "This just isn't for me." "I didn't know how difficult it would be."
Well, I am a single Mom of three who, before joining the direct sales held down two jobs. I would get up at 4:00 in the morning and not getto bed until midnight most nights, after returning from my part-timeretail job, packing lunches, checking homework and relieving my mother, who helped out with the kids.
That, my friends, is difficult.
It is difficult always having to lower your dreams to meet your means. It is difficult to miss your son's football game because you have to work. It is difficult knowing the rust bucket you call a car is eating you alive in maintenance, but you can't afford a new one. It is difficult to realize that someone else is going to watch your daughter take her first step or have your son say mama to the preschool teacher.
It is difficult knowing that you have spent 40 years of your life working for someone else, only to realize that you will be retiring on one-third of what you can live on today. Or, worse yet, it is difficult knowing that ! you have diligently worked all your life, only to be given an early retirement and replaced by someone younger, more capable.
I will tell you what is difficult. It is difficult waking up one morning and realizing that your children, the most precious things imaginable, no longer need bottles, diapers, have tea parties, or are shorter than the baseball bat they are trying to swing. It is difficult realizing it is too late and that the time frittered away can never be retrieved. It slips through our fingers one second at a time.
It is also difficult watching the spark in your partner's eyes fade because both of you realize the house you have been wanting is just a dream because someone else is controlling your finances.
We have nasty habits about rationalizing, procrastination and skirting important things, rather than facing the issues. Too often we allow others who do not pay our bills, who do not share our dreams, to direct our futures.
As children we have absolutely no freedom; we rebel in our teens and scream for freedom. We reach adulthood and are finally free, only to relinquish that freedom because we think it is too difficult. We do not want to take responsibility. We do not want to make a wrong decision, so we obligingly give that awesome power to someone else. We wake up too late. We hear ourselves uttering phrases like: "I wish I had only . . ." and "If I could do it over again."
You have no one but yourself to blame. You had the chance. Perhaps the opportunity was presented many times and each time you elevated the trivial to a higher priority than yourself.
Let me ask you: Is Network Marketing really difficult?
Is it so traumatic to show someone an exciting opportunity and an awesome product? Is it so difficult to understand that if you work this marketing idea for three to five years, you just might finally be able to send your children to a college chosen by excellence, rather than one chosen by price? That you could finally put your family in the home of their dreams?
Would you work really hard for eight to ten years, so you could mold a lifestyle of your choosing, so your family could live a lifestyle of their dreams, rather than trying to live how someone else thinks you should live?
How difficult is it to pick up the phone and call your friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers? How difficult is it to pack up your kit and meet some new friends?
How difficult is it, really, to share what you love with others? Think about it.
Realize the awesome power you have in your hands with "Barefoot Secret Company"...There are people out there working three jobs. There are people drowning in debt; or agonizing through bankruptcy, realizing they only needed a couple hundred more dollars per month. That is difficult!
This business you have chosen has the ability to change lives.
But YOU can change lives with it. You are the one with the life-changing ability. What are you waiting for? There is difficulty and pain in success, and! there is difficulty and pain in failure.
Difficulty and pain in success will last a short period of time; but pain in regret lasts a lifetime. Which one is really more difficult? You will pay a price for your actions, and your choices.
